The reading: mining is cutting capital spend, credit is dearer and the rand is softer. Replacement parts hold up better than new equipment, and distributors will want help carrying stock.

Your partner's scorecard can matter as much as your product

Spend with a Level 1 B-BBEE supplier counts at 135% for the buyer's procurement score; with a non-compliant supplier, 0%. For mining and state-owned buyers, choosing a distributor is a market-access decision.

Local procurement still shapes mining supply

The 2018 Mining Charter set local-procurement targets for mining goods. A 2021 High Court ruling found it is policy rather than binding law, yet mines continue to report against it.

HYPOTHESIS

MRO demand follows the installed base, not the headlines

When mining or processing output falls, new equipment orders drop first. Replacement parts and consumables follow the machines already running, so MRO demand is steadier than capital spend.
